Basketball Coaching & Training Experience

Dr. Stephen Neal with 16 years of experience developing players at the Division I, II and III collegiate level as well as high school level in California enters his first season as Millennium High School Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach. Being a former student-athlete from Saint Mary’s High School (Phoenix, AZ: class of 89), University of Arizona and Menlo College, Dr. Neal understands the lifestyle and challenges of an athlete and how important it is to be prepared mentally, physically, emotionally, and staying academically eligible in order to compete within a respectable conference.
During the summer as a pro-am women’s basketball coach, Dr. Neal has collaborated with coaches from Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, USC, Saint Mary’s, San Jose State University, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and University of San Francisco in developing their in-coming and current players.

Dr. Neal has had the pleasure of training players such as Kate Paye, Kate Starbird, Nicole Powell, Sebnem Kimyacioglu, Aimee Grzyb, Romesha Craig, Heather Owens, Anita Kaplan, Brooke Jackson, Vanessa Nygaard, Molly Goodenbour and many more.

Some of Dr. Neal’s achievements as a coach include the following:

  • 5 Central Coast Section (CCS) Appearances with Menlo High School (1992-1996)
  • 2 CCS Championships with Menlo  High School (1994 and 1995)
  • 6 CCS Appearances with Notre Dame Belmont High School (1997-2002)
  • 1 CCS Championship with Notre Dame Belmont High School (1999)
  • 5 Girl Private School League Titles as Head JV coach at Notre Dame Belmont High School (1997-2002)
  • 4 League Championships with ProCity Basketball League
  • All-star head coach against San Jose Lasers (ABL)
  • Arizona All-star Assistant and Head Coach (2007-2008)
  • Assisted in training the 2008 Gold Medal USA Women Basketball Team

Personal Background

Dr. Neal was born in Flagstaff, Arizona and raised in Phoenix, AZ.  Following graduation from Saint Mary’s High School, Dr. Neal attended the University of Arizona in which he made the University of Arizona’s football team as a walk-on and went to two bowl games (Cooper Bowl and Aloha Bowl).  Thereafter, Dr. Neal transferred to Menlo College to finish his academics graduating with a double major (Humanities and Psychology) and finishing on the top 10 list of all-time rushers and all-purpose leaders.  After completing his BA, Dr. Neal went on to receive a MS in Counseling Psychology and a second MS in Clinical Psychology, and thereafter, his doctoral (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology.  Dr. Neal is currently, a full-time School Psychologist for the State of Arizona.
